History
During
the Civil War, the Union Army established Camp Billy Williams on this site to
guard the Green River against enemy infiltration,
and in December 1861 the camp was placed under the command of Col. Frank
Wolford of the 1st Kentucky Cavalry.
The “Wild Riders” of the 1st Kentucky constantly
scouted the heavily forested countryside surrounding the camp to keep the
Rebel raiders at bay.
In
July 1863 Colonel Wolford set out from Camp Billy Williams in pursuit of
Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, finally capturing him and the remainder
of his 2,500 men near Stubenville, Ohio after 24
days of hard riding through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.
